THE COLDHAM HALL CHRONICLE

NEWS & VIEWS FROM COLDHAM HALL SAILING CLUB

CHRISTMAS PUDDING RACE 2001

August 2011

The general consensus of opinion is that our 60 th Anniversary event was a real success and enjoyed by all. Mary Upton was there, one of the founder members of CHSC, along with over 100 members, their family and friends. It was great to see Kim as part of the very entertaining Norwich Ukulele Society who were one of the bands playing. The rain stopped in time so that we could all enjoy a mainly sunny evening with the barbeque and two bands. Much work went into the organisation by the subcommittee: Kim Mayfield, Kevin Priest and David Woolston. However, numerous members have also to be thanked for their help which assisted in the success of the evening. Coldham Hall Tavern provided the much appreciated barbeque.

The regatta next day attracted many sailors and the rain stayed away until sailing had finished. Trophies were won by: Colin Brown (Cruiser). Judith Robertson (Ladies), Kevin Priest (Dinghies and Regatta Tankard), Paul Tegerdine (half deckers), John Ellis ( Norfolk ) and Brian Wells (Novices). To commemorate the 60 th Anniversary elegant glass trophies were given for the recipients to keep.

The sailing appreciation course was concluded on 30 th June and we hope that many of the 32 participants will stay with us. Many thanks to Derek Watson (Commodore - who was organiser) and to members who gave their time and used their own boats so that this event could take place. It is an important source of new members to regenerate the club. Some participants came to the ongoing Thursday evening social sailing sessions, which have stopped now due to the nights drawing in. Daytime group sailing generally on Thursday/Friday continues. If anyone wants to join us, please let us know.

The club will have a stand at the Surlingham Village fayre on 3 rd September (1pm to 6pm) on the field behind the village school. It has been proposed that our stand will have a raffle of 'boaty' prizes (for example a trip on a cruiser or toys/models) to raise funds for the church and another village institution. Please come and support us and the village. There will also be crazy games and food and bar.

The Yare Navigation Race is organised by CHSC (Geoff Pinder and committee) and will take place 24 th September. To obtain further information or a race entry form (to be returned by 28 th August) visit the website: www.coldhamhallsailingclub.co.uk and follow the Yare Navigation pages. Extract from the website:- We anticipate an entry of between 50 and 60 yachts to take part, and hope for a fresh to moderate wind to help everyone get around the course. The Start will be the Coldham Hall Sailing Club start line, and competing yachts can choose their own start times, available every 15 minutes from 0900 hrs. High Water at Coldham Hall at about 1030 am this year. The yachts proceed to the Turning Mark, which is usually positioned some way into Breydon Water and then the yachts set off for Coldham Hall again, usually with a following tide. Members of the sailing club will be doing the admin. and Sailors/spectators meet at the tavern in the evening.

The next social event will be the Annual Dinner on Friday 25 th November at the Oaklands. Keep the date free and the usual e-mail will be sent to order tickets, nearer the time.

We have been advised that Beccles sailing club has suffered some thefts in recent weeks. None reported here, but it may be prudent to be aware of security of property at the club.

Finally a couple more thank you's. To John Wells and Don Baker for making and fitting the new ladders which have been placed in the wet mooring area to enable easier access to the boats/bank. Also to John Wells and Alan Sant who have helped the Mill Chick syndicate with the rigging on the Yeoman.
